OVERVIEW OF LOCAL STRUCTURE
Brent Tully
University of Hawaii

Large redshift surveys are being undertaken which will provide information on structures on large scales and provide good statistics on the properties of the distribution of galaxies. However data already exists locally that provides unique information. (1) The density of galaxies/Mpc^3 realized in local all-sky samples cannot be matched by the current large redshift surveys. (2) Only locally can distance measurements lead to isolation of peculiar motions, allowing comparison between the distribution of matter and the distribution of light. A compendium of literature redshifts provides a sample of 35,000 galaxies within a box +/-8000 km/s on a side. The zone of obscuration has been sufficiently filled in that the remaining gap is only a minor annoyance. Animated mapping will be presented that reveal the dominant structures in this region: the Great Attractor, the Great Wall, and the Perseus-Pisces/Southern Wall structures. Some prominent voids will be identified.
