A NEW DATABASE AND ATLAS FOR MARKARIAN AND SBS GALAXIES
Brian McLean
Space Telescope Science Institute

The First (Markarian) and Second (SBS) Byurakan Surveys are very well known sources of star forming and active galaxies in the local universe. A database for the 1544 Markarian and 1258 SBS galaxies has been created which contains accurate coordinates, morphological, spectral and activity classes, redshifts, apparent magnitudes, angular diameters and axial ratios. In addition, the numbers of neighboring objects in a circle of radius 50 kpc are provided. Many of these parameters were measured using the digitized F (red) and J (blue) band images extracted from photographic plates obtained for the POSS II. The database also includes some previously published measurements and extensive notes, which summarize information about the membership of these objects in different systems of galaxies. Using this database, the spatial distribution, close environment, the luminosity and diameter functions of Markarian and SBS galaxies have been studied. This poster will present results and conclusions of these studies.
