THE LOCAL LARGE SCALE STRUCTURE FROM HIPASS
Martin A Zwaan
University of Melbourne

In this talk we will give an overview of the results from HIPASS, a blind extragalactic neutral hydrogen (HI) survey of the whole southern sky. This survey is not biased by the absorption in the plane of the Milky Way, and hence gives a clear view of the local large scale structure. We will demonstrate this by showing 3-dimensional movies of the galaxy distribution. An analysis of the 2-point correlation function shows that HI-selected galaxies follow the same large scale structure as optically selected galaxies, but are less strongly clustered. We will also present recent results on the velocity function of galaxies, the baryonic mass function and the HI mass function. HIPASS allows us for the first time to study how the HI mass function depends on local galaxy density and morphology. An integration over the HI mass function gives a new accurate measurement of the density of cool baryons in the local Universe.
