MAPPING GALAXIES AT REDSHIFT 2.4: TOO MANY VOIDS.
Paul J Francis
The Australian National University

We have mapped the distribution of Lyman-alpha emitting galaxies at redshift 2.38. We identified 34 galaxies in a cubic region roughly 70 co-moving Mpc on a side. This cubic volume is very different from that sampled by Lyman-break samples, which are essentially pencil-beams, and allows us to contrain the topology of the high redshift galaxy distribution. While the two-point correlation coefficient of the galaxies is consistent with previous observations and with theoretical expectations, the void probability function is significantly greater than expected. Fewer than 3% of mock Lambda CDM simulations contain voids as large and as numerous as we find. This tentative result may suggest the formation of galaxies in low density regions occured after redshift 2.38.
