DEEPER INTO THE FURNACE, DEEPER INTO THE RIVER

From our previous analysis of HIPASS data, we know that the Fornax Cluster is embedded in a large-scale sheet of HI-rich galaxies, although there is a deficit of HI-rich galaxies in the cluster core (Waugh, M. et al., 2002, MNRAS, 337). We now present results from two deeper blind HI surveys, each covering 100 sq deg and centred on, respectively, the Fornax Cluster and a region to the north west where we detect an overdensity of late-type galaxies outside an optical cluster environment. Comparison of the two fields contributes to our understanding of the structure, evolution and dynamics of galaxies in regions of differing HI and galaxy density.
