THE MOLONGLO GALACTIC PLANE IMAGING SURVEY
Anne J Green
University of Sydney

The Molonglo Galactic Plane Survey (MGPS) is a project to map a large section of the southern Galactic Plane in the radio continuum at 843 MHz, using the Molonglo Observatory Synthesis Telescope (MOST). The region being observed is 240 < l < 365, |b| < 10 degrees, with a spatial resolution of about 45 arcsec and an average sensitivity of about 1.5 mJy/beam. We see sources with a wide variety of angular structures, which are predominantly ionized gas clouds or supernova remnants. There is also a significant population of small diameter Galactic sources, many as yet unidentifed. The project seeks to explore the detailed relationship between the observed radio emission and star formation in the spiral arms of our Galaxy. Comparisons with infrared data allow us to distinguish emission mechanisms and we report on the interface between different kinds of discrete sources and the diffuse interstellar medium.
