USNO/ATNF ASTROMETRY AND IMAGING OF SOUTHERN ICRF SOURCES
Roopesh Ojha

The U.S. Naval Observatory (USNO) and the Australia Telescope National Facility (ATNF) are collaborating in a continuing VLBI research program in Southern Hemisphere source imaging and astrometry. The goals of this program are two fold: to search for new astrometric sources for densification of the ICRF and to image all southern hemisphere ICRF sources at least twice for structure monitoring. In order to identify new extragalactic radio sources to be added to the ICRF, survey observations of selected ATCA calibrator sources have been interspersed among the imaging observations. These survey observations have, to date, identified a total of 29 compact sources as possible astrometric targets. Dedicated astrometric VLBI experiments have been scheduled to determine accurate positions for these sources. All 184 existing ICRF sources south of -20 degrees, have been imaged at least once and the second epoch of observations is underway.
