THE WINGS SURVEY: THE FIRST RESULTS
Daniela Bettoni
Osservatorio Astronomico di Padova

A two-band (B and V) wide field imaging survey of a sample of nearby galaxy clusters is presented. The sample comprises 78 clusters in the redshift range z=0.04-0.07. This survey will provide the astronomical community with a complete set of homogeneous, CCD based surphace photometry and morphological data of nearby clusters galaxies located within 1.5 Mpc from the cluster center. As a natural follow up of the photometric survey we are carrying out a long term spectroscopic program with WHT-WYFOS and AAT-2dF multifiber spectrographs. Using our automatic tool for surphace photometry and morphological classification of galaxies (GASPHOT) we can derive all the morphological parameters for a large sample of galaxies. We found that, using a Sersic law to fit the luminosity profile, the Sersic index n=2 can be used as a discriminant to distinguish early from late type galaxies. Preliminary results (redshifts and line indices) from the spectroscopic data will be also presented.
