THE UKIRT INFRARED DEEP SKY SURVEY PLANS
Steve Warren

The UKIRT Infrared Deep Sky Survey (UKIDSS, www.ukidss.org) is a set of surveys in the YJHK bands ranging in depth from K=18.4 (over 4000 sq. degs) to K=23 (over 0.77 sq. degs). UKIDSS is the next generation near-infrared sky survey, and will provide the near-infrared counterpart to SDSS. UKIDSS will collect 100 times as many photons as 2MASS. These very ambitious surveys are made possibly by the construction of the Wide-Field Camera for UKIRT, WFCAM, at the ATC, Edinburgh. WFCAM has 4 2048 Hawaii II arrays, and a field of view of 0.21 sq. degs. The surveys will begin at the end of 2003, and take about 1000 nights of UKIRT time, over 7 years. In this paper I will describe the parameters of the surveys, the scientific goals, and the current status of the camera and plans for implementation of the surveys.
