GROUPS AND CLUSTERS OF GALAXIES
Carlos Frenk
Inst for Computational Cosmology, Durham

I will discuss the construction and early analysis of a sample of groups and clusters constructed from the 2dF Galaxy Redshift Survey. The catalogue contains about 30,000 groups with at least two members, with a median redshift of about 0.1 and a mean velocity dispersion of about 250 km/s. I will present results for the statistical properties of the group population as a whole and for the galaxy content of groups as a function of their mass and luminosity. I will use results from large cosmological simulations of galaxy formation in the cold dark matter cosmology to assess the reliability of the group catalogue itself and to aid in the interpretation of its properties.
