DETECTION OF COMPACT SOURCES IN CMB MAPS
Jose Luis Sanz
IFCA

We are interested in the detection of compact sources embedded in a background whose statistical properties are known. Linear filtering of the data in order to get the sources is the primary goal. Several filters have been introduced in the literature to deal with the problem (e. g. matched filters, mexican hat wavelet). One interesting question relative to all of these filters is the optimality, i. e. confidence level of the detections, number of spurious sources which emerge in the process and number of real sources detected (detection limit and completitude magnitude). Local peak detection is used after filtering and then, the Neyman-Pearson criterium is used to define the region of acceptation. Application to the detection of point sources and clusters in cosmic microwave background maps (CMB), representing the future observations by the Planck mission, will be considered. We will also apply the technique to the detection of clusters in X-ray maps.
