RAVE: The RAdial Velocity Experiment
Matthias Steinmetz
Potsdam University

The Radial Velocity Experiment (RAVE) is a two phase survey designed to measure radial velocities and metallicities of stars in the solar neighborhood down to ~15 magnitude. The main aim is to determine the kinematics of the local spiral arm of the Milky Way and to put constraints on its formation history. Phase 1 will utilize the 6dF multi-object spectrograph on the UK-Schmidt telescope at the Anglo-Australian Observatory. It will target on 100,000 stars within a 2-3 year period. Phase 2 will be performed with a new Echidna-type multi-object spectrograph on telescopes in the northern and southern hemisphere. It will be a magnitude-limited full-sky survey with a depth and extent that complements that of the next generation of astrometric satellites.
