Super Science Fellowships in Geophysical, Galactic, and Extra-Galactic Science with the AuScope and Australian Pathfinder Arrays

The University of Tasmania is offering two post-doctoral Fellowships in Space Science and Astronomy under the Australian Research Council’s (ARC) Super Science Fellowship (SSF) program.

the Super Science Fellows will be among the first people to do research with and for the AuScope and Australian Pathfinder radio telescope arrays. Through this research, the Fellows will determine the scale of the Milky Way Galaxy and structure of its interstellar gas. They will generate a catalog of primary reference radio sources for the extension of the International Celestial Reference Frame to the Southern Hemisphere. The Fellow will extend this to the Earth by linking the celestial reference frame to the terrestrial reference frame, making a fundamental contribution to underpinning the Australian geodetic framework into the future.

Two SSFs are being offered, each for a three year duration based at the University of Tasmania, commencing in 2010:

1. The scale of the Milky Way Galaxy.
This Fellowship is part of the Galactic Astronomy theme at UTAS

2. Astronomical and Geodetic VLBI using the AuScope array.
A detailed study of southern reference sources (structure, variability) to improve the quality of southern geodetic VLBI solutions, and produce the first geodetic results from the AuScope VLBI array. These, when combined with data from other techniques, will allow for a detailed study of the strain field of the Australian continent and changes due to hydrological loading. This Fellowship is part of the Environmental Space Geodesy theme at UTAS

The appointment will be at Academic Level B and will have a total remuneration package of up to $99,122 per annum (comprising salary within the range $ 71,852- $84,720 plus 17% superannuation, with the option of an additional 3% salary loading in exchange for 14% instead of 17% superannuation). The Fellowships include a budget for travel and research expenses of $20,000 per annum.
Relocation assistance will be provided in accordance with the UTAS Relocation Policy and Procedures.

Prospective applicants for the Super Science Fellowships at the University of Tasmania should download the package from: http://jobs.admin.utas.edu.au/positions/pd_list.aspx?Type=Academic. See codes HAN 161/10 and HAN 162/10.
