Subject: Interim Assistant Director: Engineering Tasso Tzioumis

Dear Colleagues,

As you know, Graeme Carrad will retire at the beginning of May. CASS
will shortly move into the National Facilities and Collections line of
business as part of the CSIRO restructure, and we remain under the
provisions of the interim recruitment arrangements. After some
consideration of this context I decided to ask a member of the CASS
staff to take on the responsibilities of Assistant Director: Engineering
on an interim basis, for an initial period of 12 months to allow a
reassessment of the needs of CASS in 6-9 months time.

I am pleased to announce that Tasso Tzioumis has agreed to take on these
responsibilities. As many of you will know, Tasso is a senior and
experienced member of the CASS staff. He is a member of the Operations
program with a long background in engineering issues. Tasso will bring
very valuable expertise and perspective to our engineering and
technology activities.

Tasso will of course be a member of the CASS Executive. While his
appointment is made as an interim arrangement, Tasso will have full
responsibility for the leadership of engineering staff and activities,
and will set the direction for CASS in these areas.

Please join me in congratulating Tasso, and supporting him in meeting
the demands of his new responsibilities.

Tasso will continue to have significant responsibilities in
international radio spectrum management activities, especially through
the International Telecommunications Union, and will continue his active
engagement in VLBI.

Some changes in the roles and responsibilities of a number of members of
the CASS Executive are likely to occur in the coming weeks as we align
CASS with the new structures under the Integrated Reform Program. I will
inform you of those changes as they occur. Since CASS fits more or less
as is into the National Facilities and Collections line of business in
the new structure, headed by Dave Williams as the Sector Executive,
those changes will be relatively minor and will have little flow on
effect for other CASS staff. CASS and CCI have agreed that eight staff
members from CCI working on CASS activities associated with ASKAP and
SKA will transfer into CASS as part of the Integrated Reform Program.
Those staff will join the engineering program under Tasso's leadership.
Please make them welcome.

I'd like to thank Graeme for his tremendous contributions to CASS and
CSIRO over his career. It has been a pleasure and a privilege to work
with Graeme over the years, and I know many of you will share that view.
Please come and celebrate Graeme's many contributions, professional,
personal and sartorial, at his farewell afternoon tea on May 2.

Regards,
Lewis
