The Ellery Lecture is held every two years in memory of Robert Ellery. Ellery was Director of Melbourne Observatory for much of the second half of the 19th century, and one of the outstanding workers in Australian astronomy in that era. I thank Mike Bessell, Peter Gillingham, Harry Hyland, Peter McGregor and the two anonymous referees for their helpful suggestions, all of which have helped improve this paper.Next Section: References
