A Joint ESO/Australia Workshop "Looking Deep in the Southern Sky"
Funded under the International Collaboration Project of the
MNRF Program

Proposers: R Morganti and E Sadler

This meeting was held 10-12 December 1997 at the State Library of NSW. There were about 110 participants, with approximately 50 international visitors attending. The conference focussed on current and planned surveys of the southern sky in wavelength ranges covering most of the electromagnetic spectrum. In particular, the meeting assesed the impact of these surveys on the science to be conducted with the new-generation eight metre class telescopes being constructed by ESO and other observatories. These telescopes will be able to view the very early universe, including the first epoch of galaxy formation.

The meeting was judged succesful in bringing together a diverse range of observers to discuss areas of collaboration. Of particular note was an impromptu discussion aimed at co-ordinating observations of the southern Hubble deep field. A number of distinguished international visitors attended the meeting, and funding received from the MNRF Program was used to support travel to Australia by these key participants. The proceedings of the workshop will be published by Springer-Verlag and will be edited by Drs R Morganti and W Couch; MNRF funding will be acknowledged in all publications arising from the workshop.
