Summer Vacation Program - Observatory Trip

Here is some information for the ATNF summer vacation student Narrabri Observatory trip for 2005/2006.

Draft Version - some changes may be made

Travel and accommodation

The Observatory trip will take place from 13 to 17 January 2006. The observations will be supported at Narrabri by Tony Wong.

The ATNF will provide the travel and accommodation expenses for the trip. Accommodation has been booked and will be at the on-site lodge at the Observatory. The rooms are fully catered and there is no need to bring sheets, sleeping bags etc.

If you have any medical concerns or special dietary needs, please let the Narrabri staff know by contacting Joanne Houldsworth (Joanne.Houldsworth@csiro.au, x4049).

There are a couple of options for getting to Narrabri:

  • Go by car - there may be a car or two driving up with spaces available for lifts. If you are driving allow about 6.5 hours driving time from Sydney and 4.5 hours from Parkes with extra time for stops. As there has been recent road damage near the site, it is essential to check with Narrabri staff (and on the Narrabri web site) before you go about the best route for access to the site. Keep petrol receipts as these will be reimbursed.
  • Go by train. On 13 January the train to Narrabri departs from Strathfield at 10:16 am (or 10:05 from Central), arriving into Narrabri at 5:41 pm. On 17 Jan the return train leaves Narrabri at 9:25 am and arrives back at Strathfield at 4:48 pm. The train passes through some very beautiful countryside, especially in the Hawkesbury region. Rob can book train tickets as needed. Anyone travelling by train will be met in Narrabri and taken to the site.

Please let Rob know by Friday 6 Jan if you plan to travel by car or train and if you need help finding a lift.

Weekend work

Please note that although you will be working without additional pay over the weekend, we do expect you to be at work the following week. If you need to take some time off after the trip, please discuss this with your supervisor.
