The STScI Digitised Sky Survey

Digitised versions of the SERC (UK Schmidt) and Palomar photographic sky surveys are available on CD-ROM sets held at each of the Epping, Narrabri and Parkes libraries. Each set comprises 102 CD-ROMs, covering the whole sky at 1.7arcsec sampling resolution. To extract images from the Survey;
  1. Log in to any Sparc or Ultra with a CD-ROM drive (Solaris required, not SunOS 4).
  2. Type the command 'getimage' and enter the name, coordinates, and requested size of the image region(s) as instructed. For each image, locate and mount the requested CD-ROM volume.
  3. IMPORTANT: return the CD-ROMs to the library!

  4. The extracted images are written as FITS files into the current working directory. They can be viewed either by loading them into AIPS (tasks IMLOD, SKYVE) or Miriad, or by using the stand-alone FITS viewer 'fv'.

    To access 'fv', edit your ~/.login.packages file if necessary, replacing '-fv' with '+fv'.
