1. Introduction

The ATNF website reflects the organizations importance as a major National Research Facility. It serves as a resource for staff, astronomers from around the world and the general public, supplying technical documentation, news, data and images. The website is very large, containing over 15,000 pages, and the responsibility for publishing and maintaining contents is spread over many staff at 3 separate locations.

Web standards and technology have changed rapidly over the past decade and will continue to do so. It is important that the ATNF adopts new standards and technology where they are appropriate while still supporting older methods where necessary.

The challenge facing the ATNF is to manage the scale of the site while providing quality, accessible content and taking advantage of the rapidly changing technologies of the Internet. This document discusses the potential for new standards and technologies to be applied to the ATNF website and sets out a strategy for updating the site.
