Outreach

Outreach is an important area of my work. I am a founder member of the PULSE@PKS project which aims to allow high-school students around the World to carry out observations using the Parkes telescope that are usable by the scientific community. This will be developed in the longer term to provide an educational outreach component to the Australian SKA pathfinder (ASKAP) telescope. Highlights include

  • Allowing Texan high-school students to carry out the first overseas remote observing with the Parkes radio telescope.
  • Developing the PULSE@PKS project.
  • Lecturing to a group of "virtual people" on SecondLife as part of the ABC series of virtual talks
  • Working with schools in Western Australia as part of the WildFlowers in the Sky project. This included describing gravitational waves at the Meekatharra School of the Air.
  • Talked on 3RRR radio station in Melbourne (10/02/2008)
